Chronic pain

It seems Ebola has settled down and it has disappeared from this side of the Atlantic. Good. It will reappear, but hopefully by then there may be a vaccine for it. In this day and age it is easy for a disease to spread by our modern transportation systems. I am pleased we where able to contain it.
On a different subject. I have found in the past few months that I have had increasing difficulty controlling my pain in feet, knees and back. I am 74. So I have been doing some research on what works. I have found a few herbs that have been helpful.
Curcumin is a derivative of Turmeric and is a known anti inflammatory. In the form of BCM-95 it reaches the blood stream better and stays at sustained levels. I get about six hours of relief out of it though the advertisements say up to twelve hours. I do not wait to see how bad it will become in that amount of time. I have spoke of this before. It is kind of pricy and can go for fifty cents a pill, but unlike celebrex, Ibuprophen and other non steroidals it does not cause heart attack and stroke in those who use it chronically. Everyday is a danger so best taken only periodically if needed.
The secret to controlling pain is to be able to take some everyday that works and ( by my standards) does not put me at increased risk from stroke and heart attack like all the non steroidals do. Btw, turmeric is what turns rice yellow in Indian Rice preparations.
Again looking for some thing that works well I looked into Boswellia Serrata. Also know as Frankincense. This works also and is cheaper. Good! It goes back to biblical times and has been used successfully. Anything else. Yes there is and in about the same price range. A product called "Devils Claw". Used successfully in Africa straight from the root by native peoples. I understand this is quite frequently used in Europe also. Available in pills too, of course.
Curcumin has been tested in very high doses and not seen to have significant side effects. I suspect that a whole bottle maybe taken without toxicity. It might not settle well on the stomach however.
Boswellia Serrata has not been studied and it is unknown, scientifically, that there is not toxicity after three months of daily ingestion. We do know that no one has spoken of toxic effects in the past two thousand years of its use. Or at least in my readings, I have seen nothing.
Devils Claw has been extensively used and precautions are stated to watch for side effects. Again this has no recorded side effects though it is stated it may cause symptoms.
So, I take all three and in doses lower than what is on the bottle. I have had no problems. My wife uses them also. Btw, if you look at Osteo bioflex it list boswellia serrata as a ingrediant. As in all herbs and drugs. Be aware that anyone can have allergic reactions to almost anything at times. Reading up on these and becoming informed on them is a good thing. Record what you are doing. If you take something in the am write it down and continue to write it down through the day with what ever you take. Make notes how much it helped you and at what time you took it. Be aware and learn accordingly.
Another btw. Saw this article. Brand new formulation that has no side effects and helps dogs with arthritic pain. They say there are no side effects and might help humans. Really! I have been taking those right along and so have others. Some for centuries. Read it for your self, and be aware people like to take credit for new things that are in some instances very very old, indeed.
